Choosing support

When a support service lists no language information

The service page lists a number and hours but says nothing about which languages it uses.

An open reference book, papers and reading glasses on a table.

When a service page lists a number and hours but no languages, the honest reading is that the page does not say. The fix is to ask at the start of your first call or message, and to write down what you hear.

If you are in danger right now, call 999 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department. Do not use this page to compare services first.

What could we confirm, and what is still unknown?

This table shows what our checked sources say for four services, and what they leave out. Details were taken from each organisation’s own or a government page, and the check date appears in the sources at the foot of this page.

ServiceWhat the source saysNot stated
HEAL 15555National mental health crisis helpline offering counselling and social support, every day including public holidays, 8 am to midnight1Languages, cost, eligibility
Befrienders Kuala LumpurEmotional support line +603-7627 2929, free, confidential, open 24 hours every day2Languages

MENTARISelayang branch +60361270946; Sungai Buloh branch +603-61561321 (ext. 2276) or 018-86610244Operating hours, languages, cost, eligibility

We have not confirmed which languages any of these four use, and we will not guess.

Who is eligible and what may it cost?

From the sources above, only Befrienders KL states a cost: free. For the others, eligibility and cost are not stated in the pages we opened. Talian Kasih is run through the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and covers abuse, neglect and requests for help3, which tells you its scope but not who may call.

Ask directly: “Is there any cost, and do I need a referral or an appointment?”

What is the first contact step and what do I prepare?

For the helplines, the first step is a call, and for Talian Kasih a WhatsApp message is also listed. For MENTARI, the page lists branch numbers, so call the branch nearest you and ask how to start.

You do not need much ready. A quiet spot, a charged phone and the language you prefer are enough.

Try this: a first-call script

Keep these lines on your phone. Say as much or as little as you like.

  1. “Good day. May I speak in Malay, English, Mandarin or Tamil?” Name the one you want.
  2. If the answer is no, ask: “Which language can you offer, and is there another line in my language?”
  3. Ask: “Is there any cost, and do I need a referral?”
  4. Ask: “What happens next, and how long might it take?”
  5. Write down the name of the service, the date and what you were told.

If the call does not suit you, you can end it politely and try another service.

What if I cannot get an answer?

Open the service’s own website and look for a contact or about page. Ask a clinic nurse, a pharmacist or a trusted community leader which service they would use in your language. Our guide on choosing local help while keeping website language and service location separate helps with this.

Do not fill a gap with someone else’s guess, including ours. If you cannot confirm a detail, treat it as unknown.

Adapting this to real life

If you are calling for a parent who speaks a dialect, say so at the start. If your phone is shared, use WhatsApp or a message where it is offered. If calling feels too big, ask a friend to sit beside you.

When to get more support

Our guide on finding suitable support when a resource is not enough and the support page list more helplines and first steps. A self-help guide cannot assess you, as why a self-help tool is not an assessment explains.

Where to go next

If the page you found was a translation, read reading a translated support page without assuming it applies in your country. The whole set is on our what the research says guides.

For now, the best next step is the support page, and any practice can wait until you are connected to the right help.

If you are choosing support for yourself or someone you care about, our support page is the best next step, and the app can wait.

Common questions

What if a service page does not mention language?

It means the page does not say, not that the answer is no. Ask in the language you prefer at the start of the call or message, and ask which languages are available. If it is not offered, ask whether there is a better-suited service.

Can I just call and ask?

Yes. A first call can be as simple as giving your name (or not), saying which language you would like to use, and asking what the service can help with. You do not need a full story ready, and you can end the call if it does not fit.

How do I know what it costs?

Read the service's own page, and ask at the start. Befrienders KL lists its emotional support line as free. For other services, our records do not state a cost, so ask before you go further.

What if I am in danger right now?

Do not spend time comparing services. Call 999 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department. Callers to HEAL 15555 needing urgent help may be referred to 999, so emergency help is the faster route.
